Inkscape MLP Build Guide by Khosan Inkscape MLP Build Guide by Khosan
My big honking tutorial for how to make a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic-style pony with Inkscape.

Still kind of a work in progress. Which is to say, I'll add more as I learn how to do new stuff. Or as I make the tutorial better, because I am not that good at telling people how to do stuff.

Updated! With a better way to handle heads. I figured out that I could disconnect the mouth/nose/snout area from the rest of the head. Means you'll have an easier time making faces since you don't need to create a collection of heads to work off of.

Another update, kind of, though I haven't done anything.

AlterForm made a guide for how to make pony eyes and for those of you who might be really new to Inkscape it'll be a big help in helping you to understand some of the stuff I did here that I glossed over.

His tutorial starts here:

How did you do the outline after the Ctrl+K (Combine) part? I guess you do this a lot with a drawing-tablet.

No tablet.  Inkscape is a vector art program, so I do at least half the work I do with it nowadays with the numpad.  You can just select an object and give it an outline automatically, varying with width and color at your whim.

You can't change the size while you're using it, but you can change it after you've finished a curve.  Select the curve and hit Ctrl+Shift+F (or double click on the the currently selected fill or stroke color in the bottom left), that'll open up the fill and stroke display.  From there, go to the Stroke Style tab and there you are.

I found another way that's just as easy (or even easier). It's a lot like the Power Stroke function in Photoshop.

With the Bezier tool selected, change the shape to ellipse (top left corner).

After you've drawn out your lines (make sure the corners are rounded, or you'll get really odd shapes), Go Path>Path Effect Editor. There's a box called Width. Change that number to change the thickness of the line. You can still change the position of the nodes on the stroked line without having to redo a bunch of stuff and you don't have so many nodes. (I had over 80k nodes on one I did, and was able to cut it down to under 300)

So that's how you do make the lines like strokes... I'be been doing it the hard way (path to object, then making the ends pointed)

For the most part, though, I think Xerophyte turned out okay (especially for a first time) [link]

I've been using Inkscape for years, but I've never found that it's possible to make those outlines look similar to actual strokes (with smoothly varying thickness). Thanks for that tip! :> (The "Special Trick") It's very handy trick indeed :>

I hate to bug you, but I need some help.
On the part where you make the hooves, whenever I use path and then division it adds a stroke to the leg where it wasn't before, where it meets the body. How do I stop it from doing this?

:iconkhosan:
Khosan Featured By Owner Aug 29, 2012
You can't as far as I'm aware. However, you can pretty easily delete the stroke that appears. Select the two nodes on either end of it and disconnect them, the same way I did with the 'neck holes'.

Thank you! Another question, could you detail what exactly I must do for the "path to pattern" to make the ends of the strokes look nicer. I use the pen to make the object I want to put on the path, then I select the fixer object and the object with the path, but when I perform the function nothing happens. I think I'm misunderstanding what I have to have selected.

Sorry for the delay, busy week. I can't really put together a full tutorial for it (and I'm kind of rubbish at tutorials, I get very wordy), so I'll link you to the one that - I think - I used to learn how pattern along path works.

Mess around with it, see what works.

Double-click the foreground or background color and there should appear a sidebar with those settings for strokes and fills. Or, you can turn it on from the menu: `Object > Stroke & fill`. Or just hit `Shift+Ctrl+F`.

Pretty much. You'll need a different mouth shape for sure. Body shape is...different, depends on what you want to accomplish. I'd highly recommend finding a reference picture for that.

Sorry guys, I'm not very friendly with Inkscape. How to make an elipse only with outline?
Reply
:iconkhosan:
Khosan Featured By Owner May 7, 2012
It's pretty simple.

1. Create your ellipse.
2. Double click on the fill color in the bottom left hand corner.
3. A menu should pop up on the right, containing the details about the fill color (including options for radial and linear gradients). The button you're interested in is the X on the same row as the other fill options.

That'll remove the fill color, leaving you with just the outline.

Alternatively, you can set your fill color to nothing which, for me, is the leftmost color on the color bar at the bottom of the screen. Indicated by a red X on a white square.

I've tried to do the last part like in the tutorial but 8 out of 10 attempts failed mostly just trying to connect first few and few last nodes ... isn't there any other software I could just put my .svg done in inkscape and do this part elsewhere ? :D

Well, I had tried to follow the instructions as precisely as I could, but it didn't change it at all. The path didn't taper out like I think it was supposed to...I know it's something that's not wrong visually, it's something I've done wrong in the steps and I can't think of what it is I've done wrong.
